Divock Origi has announced that he will be partnering with the University of Liverpool to offer a scholarship to students from the city.

The University has said that two lucky students from Liverpool will begin an undergraduate course in September.

Revealing the news on Instagram, Origi said: “I always wanted to give back to the city that gave me so much.

Speaking to University’s website, Origi continued: “From a purpose perspective and understanding the position of influence and impact I’m blessed to have, I know the importance of being given an opportunity, while also truly believing in the ability of future generations to achieve greatness.”

The scholarship will cover both tuition fees and living costs for the full 2021/22 academic year.

Origi has been a bit-part player throughout his Liverpool career. Yet he will go down in history as a legend of the club.

Some may feel that “cult hero” would be a more suitable term, but this latest contribution has taken Origi above that.

There are so many gifted individuals in Liverpool that do not get the opportunities that they deserve for whatever reason.

The 26-year-old is going out of his way to grant these individuals the opportunity to achieve what they are capable of.

The fact that he is giving back to the city in such a big way cannot go unnoticed.

Liverpool is a club that has such a special bond with the local community and Origi clearly feels that and understands it.

Of course, the Belgian has had some huge moments on the pitch. His famous goals against Everton, Barcelona and Spurs immediately spring to mind.

But a Liverpool player’s status is about more than what they do on the pitch. If they can form a bond with the area and the Scouse population, they deserve the utmost respect.

Origi undoubtedly has that.

Even if he does leave this summer after a disappointing season, he will always be welcome on Merseyside.
