Last term, player availability was a big reason why the Reds managed to win the league, and the injury list is being kept down this season once again.
The Dutch boss has already revealed that he will be rotating heavily ahead of the Carabao Cup clash vs Southampton on Tuesday:
“The good thing is I have the option to rotate throughout the week, and the ones that played three times 90 minutes are Virgil (van Dijk), Ibou (Ibrahima Konate), Mo (Mohamed Salah), Ryan and Dom (Dominik Szoboszlai), the ones that are used to this intensity at this level, and again they showed up really good.”
“I can tell you now you won’t be seeing them on Tuesday.”
But one player who likely could have faced the Saints in their stead is Will Wright who is now denied a chance to play first-team action.
The 17-year-old striker, who completed his £200,000 move from Salford City in August, was stretchered off after just 12 minutes of action at Kirkby Academy in UEFA Youth League action last week against Atletico Madrid.
Wright appeared to jar his knee during a challenge that required “lengthy treatment” before being taken from the field on a stretcher.
And now there is at least some positive news.
Academy journalist Lewis Bower reported on X that the academy star will “miss a few games” through the knee injury – although it was not as bad as initially thought:
“LFC say that Will Wright injury is not as serious as first feared but will certainly miss a few games.”
The injury had initially raised concerns of a potential ACL tear, which would have sidelined Wright for approximately nine months.
Wright’s absence will rule him out of potential involvement in Liverpool’s Carabao Cup tie against Southampton, where he might have been considered for senior action alongside other promising academy players.
