Liverpool's pursuit of Florian Wirtz could be a drawn-out affair, according to former Bayer Leverkusen chief Rudi Voller.

The ex-sporting director revealed that the Bundesliga star is keen on a move to Anfield, but cautioned that it might "take a while".

Wirtz, who has been in scintillating form for Leverkusen, scoring 16 goals and providing 13 assists during the 2024-25 season, is high on Liverpool manager Arne Slot's summer wishlist.



However, Leverkusen's hefty £126million price tag has proven a stumbling block.

Despite having two offers turned down by the German club, Liverpool remain hopeful of securing Wirtz's services, especially after rivals Manchester City and Bayern Munich withdrew from the race.

The 22-year-old added fuel to the speculation this week when he nodded his head when quizzed by a reportt if he was 'excited' regarding a move to Anfield.

German football legend Voller, who served as Leverkusen's sporting director for 17 years before stepping down in 2022, believes the transfer will eventually materialise.

Voller, who was at the club when Wirtz joined from Koln at 17, has witnessed the player's growth - going on to make 197 appearances and scoring 57 goals for the team.

Wirtz played a pivotal role in Leverkusen's historic 2023-24 season, winning the Bundesliga for the first time and the German Cup.

Wirtz started for Germany in their 2-1 Nations League semi-final defeat to Portugal, scoring Germany's only goal.
