It's claimed Liverpool has a clear path to sign Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi, as Chelsea sets its sights on different targets despite Levi Colwill's severe knee injury.

The England defender's contract at Selhurst Park expires next summer, leaving Oliver Glasner's side with limited chances to secure a fee for his services.

Guehi will be available on a free transfer at the end of next season, and there are suggestions that the London club may re-enter the market for its former academy player following news of Colwill's surgery after an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.

According to The Telegraph, Liverpool is in the driving seat to sign Guehi, 25, with Chelsea exploring other options in the market.

Arne Slot will have the opportunity to closely observe Liverpool's transfer target on Sunday when the Reds face off against the FA Cup winner in the Community Shield at Wembley.

Despite the ongoing saga surrounding Alexander Isak, Liverpool has an increasing need to bolster its central defensive options, with Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konate being the only senior backups to captain Virgil van Dijk.

Jarell Quansah made a move to Bayer Leverkusen earlier in the window, opening up the possibility of Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch stepping into the position if needed.

Andy Robertson can also play at center-back.

Slot addressed questions about his defensive line-up during the pre-match press conference ahead of the trip to Wembley Stadium.

He said: "They (Endo, Robertson, and Gravenberch) can definitely play there as well

And you forgot to mention Joe Gomez.

"Unfortunately, he has a minor injury at the moment, but he will be back with the team very soon.

"So, we still have numerous options that can play there

"But as always, what I always say, it's the same boring answer as with players that we might bring in or not.

"I'm really happy with the players we already have, and we have numerous players that can play in that position."

Liverpool is not expected to rush into a deal for Guehi, having already spent more than $300 million on new talent this summer.
