Aston Villa fans were left confused by Emiliano Martinez’s emotional reaction following the full-time whistle against Spurs on Thursday.
A man adored and idolised by the Villa faithful, Martinez joined the club in 2020 and in that time has won the World Cup with Argentina and been named the World’s Best Goalkeeper twice.
But that emotional wave could have confirmed that his chapter with Aston Villa reaches its conclusion, as clubs from the Saudi Pro League continue to circle.
Racking up 211 appearances for the Villans, Martinez has been a steady performer during his time with the Premier League side.
Due to this, many questioned his reaction on Thursday, wondering why the Argentine shot-stopper would look to move on, but for the club to comply with Profitability and Sustainability rules, Martinez is the standout choice to let go this summer, rather than offloading youngsters instead.
Taking a look at Liverpool’s goalkeeping department, if Martinez was to move on this summer, the Reds could provide the answer.
Giorgi Mamardashvili was signed by Liverpool last summer for £29 milllion, but was sent back on loan to Valencia for the season but will now join up wit the team after the conclusion of the current campaign.
Liverpool’s current second-choice goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher has made it clear for a while now that he is eagerly waiting to become No.1 at a club as he finds himself consistently behind Alisson Becker in the pecking order at Liverpool.
The arrival of Mamardashvili will provide cover for Alisson, whilst also opening up the door for Kelleher to leave and he is set to be a man in demand this summer.
Michael Hincks for the I Paper believes Caoimhin Kelleher would be a good fit for Aston Villa, with the Northern Ireland international currently valued at £40m.
Aston Villa won’t be alone if they are to pursue a deal for him this summer however, as a whole host of clubs have shown interest.
Chelsea and Newcastle United have been linked, as well as Manchester United, whilst Bournemouth are also said to be confident in their ability to lure Kelleher to the south coast.
West Ham and Leeds United have also added themselves to the mix, whilst Nottingham Forest saw their offer rejected last year by Liverpool as the club didn’t have adequate cover at the time to let him go – now they do.
Whilst it isn’t confirmed that Emiliano Martinez will leave Aston Villa this summer, actions speak louder than words and his body language on Thursday was very telling.
Kelleher would only consider Aston Villa if Martinez was to depart, as he wants a guarantee that whoever he moves to he can get that No.1 spot, and keep it.
