Liverpool great Graeme Souness hints at new role in football after making punditry comeback

Liverpool great Graeme Souness made his return to punditry on Monday morning, seven months after stepping back.

The 70-year-old had been a regular in football media since his last managerial job at Newcastle United in 2006, eventually leaving Sky Sports at the end of last season.

He helped raise over £1 million for charity during the summer as part of a team that swam 30 miles of the English Channel, and finally was confirmed to be making his return to football with appearances on talkSPORT.

In a great move for supporters that enjoy feisty debates, no-nonsense Souness will be joining host Jim White and controversial former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan every other Monday.

The Scotsman received well wishes from his new colleagues as his return was made official, responding with thanks.

However Jordan seemingly gave him the cold shoulder, prompting White to ask: "Is this some kind of role you're playing this morning?

I'm shouting it from the rooftops!"

"I've spent weeks and months campaigning for him to come back so I've got fatigue from it," Jordan replied.

"Then I have the added benefit of doing another show with him after this show, so that's where my enthusiasm is."

The former Liverpool captain and manager joked: "I'm surprised you have any money to have me back - someone in this room and Jeff [Stelling] have signed contracts, no money left in the pot."

"Well, Simon is paid in a Jersey bank account, so," White finally quipped - the banter already rife in the studio.

As mentioned, Souness has been out of any club role since 2006.

Whilst his most famous spell as a player was the six years he spent at Anfield - winning 15 trophies - his days on the pitch culminated with a player-manager role at Rangers.

White queried whether he would soon return to the Scottish club in charge of football operations, given the fact he took charge of interviews to help them replace Michael Beale with Philippe Clement earlier this season.

"I'm waiting to hear from them.

I'm not sitting looking at my phone every five minutes and now I'm back in this fold for three hours on a Monday morning," was the honest answer.

"It's just that you were looking at your phone quite a lot, I was just wondering," the host continued.

Souness admitted: "You know why?

I saved my screensaver of my young wife - why wouldn't I be looking at that all of the time?"
