Newcastle has seen another big player turn it down during the summer transfer window after Manchester United struck a deal to sign Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig.

Newcastle and United were in competition to sign the young striker, but it was always Sesko's preference to move to Old Trafford.

It has now emerged that United has agreed to pay $89 million plus $10 million in add-ons for the Slovenia international, sending Newcastle back to the drawing board in its pursuit of alternative striker targets.

Newcastle had earmarked Sesko as a possible replacement for the wantaway Alexander Isak, so his impending move to United is bad news for Liverpool fans, as there is little chance that the Magpies will allow Isak to leave without a marquee striker lined up to replace him.

Newcastle is working on a deal to sign Yoane Wissa from Brentford, but Wissa alone would not be enough to replace Isak, considering striker Callum Wilson also left Newcastle at the end of last season.

Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson is now being linked with a move to Newcastle, with his game time at Stamford Bridge likely to be limited following the arrivals of Liam Delap and Joao Pedro earlier in the window.

Liverpool saw a $146 million bid for Isak rejected last week, with the offer falling well below Newcastle's valuation of the player, which is believed to be closer to $200 million.

It was widely reported that the swift manner of Newcastle's rejection put Liverpool off from making an improved offer, but it is believed that the Reds do intend to return with an improved bid if they receive encouragement that a deal could be done.

The Isak transfer saga took another twist on Wednesday as it emerged that the Sweden international had been instructed to report to Newcastle's training ground after the rest of his teammates had returned home for the day.

The Swede has effectively been banished from first-team training by boss Eddie Howe after making it clear that he wants to leave.

Isak ruled himself out of Newcastle's pre-season tour of Asia due to a fitness issue but it later emerged that he was maintaining his fitness at former club Real Sociedad's training ground.
