Liverpool has been handed a major boost ahead of Friday's Premier League game against Bournemouth after Joe Gomez returned to training.

Gomez has not figured for Liverpool since he returned home early from the pre-season tour of China due to an Achilles problem, while his last competitive appearance for the Reds came at the beginning of February.

The former Charlton center-back's 2024-25 season was ended when he sustained a hamstring injury in the FA Cup defeat by Plymouth.

However, Gomez's return to training suggests the issue was minor, and he could now be in contention to make the squad against Bournemouth on Friday.

Gomez's return comes as a major boost at a time when the Reds are particularly light in the center of defense, following Jarell Quansah's move to Bayer Leverkusen.

Liverpool is working on deals to sign Marc Guehi and Giovanni Leoni ahead of the closure of the window in a bid to address the squad's lack of numbers in defense.

Liverpool has seemingly made swift progress with the Leoni deal over recent days, with reports on Wednesday suggesting that an agreement has been reached with both Parma and the player over an agreement for him to move to Anfield.

Liverpool is hopeful of signing both Leoni and Guehi, as the club wants to sign a more experienced player (Guehi) alongside the highly rated youngster.

It remains to be seen what the prospective additions of both players might mean for the future of Gomez, who hasn't been a regular starter since the 2019-20 season

As a result, there is a good chance that he would be demoted to the role of fifth-choice defender were both players to arrive.

Another player facing an uncertain future at Liverpool is Gomez's fellow center-back, Ibrahima Konate, whose contract with the Reds is due to expire at the end of the season.

Konate was linked with a shock move to Chelsea earlier this week but a move to Stamford Bridge for the Frenchman seems highly unlikely
