Anthony Gordon was sent off for a dangerous challenge on Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk(Image: George Wood/Getty Images)Alan Shearer has taken aim at Anthony Gordon after he was sent off against Liverpool.
The Newcastle United forward was shown a red card for a challenge on Virgil van Dijk, but that only tells half of the story.
The former Everton man was initially booked for the challenge, but following a VAR review, referee Simon Hooper upgraded the yellow card to a red.
Explaining his decision, he said: "After review, the Newcastle United number 10 commits a serious foul play challenge.
The challenge is with speed and makes clear contact on the Liverpool number 4's calf.
My final decision is red card to Newcastle United number 10."
And reacting to the red card, Shearer wrote on X: “What a stupid challenge man.
It’s a red card all day.”
