Liverpool have chance to unearth next Harvey Elliott or Curtis Jones as UEFA Youth League returns

Fans of the competition will remember Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones' dazzling displays during the 2019/20 group stages — particularly the 7-0 thrashing of Napoli where Jones scored a hat-trick and Elliott produced a scintillating all-round performance, registering an assist in the process and orchestrating many of Liverpool's regular forays forward.

The vast majority of Liverpool's young stars will be treading on uncharted territory in their fledgling careers as the UEFA Youth League returns following a hiatus in 2020/21 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Only six of Liverpool 40-men squad have competed in the UEFA Youth League in the past in Billy Koumetio, Tyler Morton, Fidel O'Rourke, Conor Bradley, Tom Hill and James Norris.

The experience helped them to accelerate forward in the pecking order and a year later both had established roles in senior football, with Jones netting in the Champions League for Liverpool and Elliott tearing it up in the Championship with Blackburn.

With Liverpool U19s set to take on AC Milan U19s at 1pm, the Reds' brightest talents, led by Kaide Gordon, will have an opportunity to get a taster of European football competing against one of Italy's best academies.

One starlet who will be looking to emulate Jones and Elliott is Gordon, who had glimpses in Liverpool's first team during pre-season and who could be on the periphery of Klopp's first-team squad this season.

The young striker is unlikely to feature given Liverpool will have an enormous 40-men squad, but is one to watch for in the future.
