Jarell Quansah’s move to Bayer Leverkusen could be short lived after details emerged of a possible transfer back to Liverpool.

Quansah departed Liverpool for Bayer Leverkusen for £35million after coming through the academy at the club.

Thomas Tuchel has called Quansah up to the England squad following injuries in the camp having started both of Bayer Leverkusen’s Bundesliga games this season.

The Daily Mirror [5 September], state that “Liverpool managed to slot in a buy back clause,” into Quansah’s contract at Bayer Leverkusen.

The buy back clause is believed to be £51m, if Liverpool want to re-sign the defender, although this will only become active from the summer of 2027.

Personal terms have already been agreed between Quansah and Liverpool, on a “new and improved contract.”

By the time 2027 comes Quansah will have two years experience of playing frequently in the Bundesliga, and with 34-year-old captain van Dijk needing to be replaced one day, the inclusion of a buy back clause in his contract could be smart business by Liverpool.

Liverpool are not obliged to buy back Quansah, and could settle for the £35m they earned this summer on an academy product.

The Reds though are not well stocked at centre-halve right now after missing out on Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi in the transfer window.

Liverpool could revisit a move for Guehi in January, with the player’s contract running out at the end of the season.
