Liverpool have been dishing out good news left, right and centre in the transfer market this summer.

On Thursday, the emphasis was on the left, as Milos Kerkez signed in as Arne Slot’s brand new full-back.

A move for Kerkez had been in the pipeline for a long while, with the former Bournemouth man identified as the ideal successor to Andy Robertson.

Robertson’s time as Liverpool‘s first choice left-back has been long, distinguished and arguably better than any other in the club’s history.

However, as Kerkez arrived as his nominal replacement, and amid interest from Atletico Madrid, it looked as though Robertson may leave Liverpool altogether.

But as Kerkez joined on Thursday, there was a twist in the Scotsman’s tale which could prove to be brilliant news for his new position mate.

With Atletico focusing their attention on Atalanta left-back Matteo Ruggeri, Robertson’s move to Spain appears to be off.

“With this move we don’t expect Andy Robertson to go to Atletico Madrid anymore,” journalist Fabrizio Romano reported on YouTube.

“He was a strong candidate and they had concrete conversations.

But the player was taking his time to decide his future out of respect with Liverpool where he’s still loving the club, and Atletico Madrid wanted to pay a very small transfer fee or a free transfer.

That was not possible and so Atletico decided to go onto a completely different type of player.”

For Kerkez, some may deduce that this would have a negative impact on his chances of starting for Liverpool, and that may be true.

However, the Hungary international waxed lyrical about Robertson during his first ever interview with LFCTV and is clearly looking forward to learning from the 31-year-old.

As a result, after being officially announced as a new Liverpool player, Kerkez ultimately received two excellent pieces of transfer news on Thursday.

While Kerkez compared himself to John Arne Riise, Liverpool’s rocket-footed former left-back during his first interview, he also made a point to hail Robertson.

“I love him [Robertson] a lot.

“I’m still young and I want to learn a lot and improve and hopefully get on their level one day.”

“I had conversations with my brothers and we always say, and also for me personally, Robbo is the best left-back who played in the Premier League, for me, and my brothers agree on that also,” Kerkez continued.

“To come and be next to such a player who has so much experience, played so many years on the highest level, won the Champions League and everything, is important for me.

All the guys are good and they’re all going to help me to reach a higher potential and I’m looking forward to it.”

Had Robertson left Liverpool this summer, Kerkez would have been robbed of the chance to learn from one of his idols.

But after Atletico dropped their interest, Liverpool’s legendary left-back looks like being in business for another year at least.
