Wirtz has been courted by a host of clubs this summer, with Manchester City and Bayern Munich also chasing his signature.
But City have pulled out of the transfer battle due to the prodigious transfer figure involved, while Bayern are reportedly resigned to missing out on him.
According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool are expected to complete the deal for Wirtz soon and there is optimism around the move.
He was reportedly left captivated by the Dutchman’s passion and the passion of the club and their fans.
And he has ultimately decided to join the English club, despite being wooed by Bayern boss Vincent Kompany during a meeting with the ex-Manchester City defender.
“Much more has been written than spoken,” explained Bayern Munich CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen as he discussed their failed pursuit of Wirtz.
“FC Bayern is one of the absolute top clubs in Europe and the world.

“But everyone knows, with FC Bayern you can win everything every year - you're involved in every competition.
The upcoming Club World Cup is a good example of that.
“Just look at which clubs are represented there and, most of all, which [clubs] aren't.
The best European clubs are competing there - including FC Bayern.
