James Milner's reign at Anfield has been long and illustrious, and in some ways unprecedented, but it appears likely that he will leave Liverpool once and for all this summer upon the expiry of his contract.

The comparisons with James Milner are fairly obvious.

Not many would have expected him to play seven seasons at the club and over 250 games when he arrived on a free transfer as a 29-year-old.

Ward-Prowse has been playing in a similar gegenpress system under Ralph Hasenhutl to the one Klopp likes to deploy at Anfield, meaning he would be able to adapt fairly easily should Liverpool decide to make a transfer.

The Southampton captain's set-piece delivery, his composure from penalties and his reading of the game are tailor-made for Liverpool, and all traits that Liverpool will lack from the departure of Milner.

Milner makes 3.88 progressive runs and attempts just 0.45 dribbles per 90, completing 66 per cent of them.

The likes of Ward-Prowse, Mwepu and Haidara would likely cost in excess of £30m, whereas Liverpool could sign Eggestein for probably about a third of that at £10-15m.
