Liverpool have reportedly lined up Jarell Quansah’s return in two years' time following the defender’s departure this summer.

The 22-year-old centre-back completed a £35million move to Bayer Levekusen in July, penning a five-year deal with the Bundesliga giants.

Quansah, who was part of the England side that won the European Under-21 Championship by beating Germany in the summer, marked the third transfer deal between Liverpool and Leverkusen, following Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz’s moves to Anfield.

The Liverpool Echo reports a clause comes into effect in 2027 which gives the club the chance to re-sign their academy graduate for €60million (£51m).

Quansah is also said to have agreed a new and improved contract with Liverpool already should they make the move for him in two years’ time, by which point he is expected to be in his prime.

That means Quansah’s move to Germany could essentially end up being a two-year loan, after which Liverpool will pay a premium to take him back if they choose to do so.

However, he featured just 13 times in the league under Arne Slot last season as the Reds clinched the title, with the Dutchman clearly having some reservations about the player.

He came through the Liverpool academy and made 58 appearances in total for the club, scoring three goals, while also winning the League Cup in 2024.

Quansah scored on his debut for Leverkusen against Hoffenheim last month, playing the full 90 minutes of their first two league games of the season, which saw manager Erik ten Hag sacked.

Following Quansah’s departure, Ibrahima Konate, Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and new signing Giovanni Leoni, who completed a £26m move from Parma in August, are Slot’s current options in central defence.

The Reds also agreed a £35m deal for Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi, but the move was blocked by the Eagles at the last second on transfer deadline day.

If Liverpool successfully bring in Guehi in January or next summer, and opt to sign Quansah a year later, the Englishman could face plenty of competition to make the first-team line-up.
