A vehicle ploughed into the packed crowd at the end of the city centre's victory celebrations at 6pm on Monday, leaving 47 people injured.

Of the 27 pedestrians taken to hospital in the devastating incident, four were seriously injured including one child who had been trapped underneath the Ford Galaxy vehicle.

A 53-year-old man was arrested at the scene, where up to one million Liverpool fans had lined the streets for the celebratory event.

"I want to thank all of the emergency services, partner agencies and members of the public who came to the assistance of the injured following this evening's shocking incident, which we declared a major incident," said Merseyside Police Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims at a press conference.

The people rushing to help at the Water Street location include firefighters who freed the four people trapped underneath the car.

Steve Rotheram, Mayor of Liverpool City Region, told the BBC four people were people "very, very ill in hospital".

One witness, Harry Rashid, who attended the parade with his wife and two young children, said people had courageously tried to stop the driver on Water Street.

"Then the crowd that was a bit further back started rushing at him trying to smash his windows.

"But then he put his foot down again and just ploughed through the rest of them, he just kept going.

Then my daughter started screaming and there were people on the ground."

Chris Jones, from Heswall, Wirral, said one desperate onlooker had pulled the driver's door open in a failed bid to stop him getting onto the road in the first place.

"He was trying to force his way through and fans were banging on his window, shouting at him for going the wrong way," he said.

"It was all supposed to be cordoned off, so he'd gone through barriers.

It was awful."

Merseyside Police Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims said the "horrific incident" was not being treated as terrorism, following the arrest of a 53-year-old man at the scene.
