Liverpool have reportedly hijacked Arsenal's move for Salford City striker Will Wright.

The 17-year-old looked all set for a transfer to the Emirates after the Gunners and Salford agreed a fee of £200,000 plus add-ons, but they were unable to convince the player, who never gave the green light.

Having offered Wright the chance to continue his development in the north-west, Liverpool were able to succeed where Arsenal failed, and agreements are now in place with the player and between the two clubs.

The north Londoners have been on the lookout for the next big striker prospect after losing academy star Chido Obi to Manchester United.

And while it looked like they had found their man in Wright, The Athletic have reported that the teenager is now bound for Anfield.

Liverpool, who matched Arsenal's financial package, will offer the forward his first taste of an elite youth system and they plan for him to join up with their Under-21s, who are managed by former Wales boss Rob Page, before they assess his suitability for the senior side.

Having established himself as a goal machine with Salford's reserves, Wright was promoted to the first team for part of last season, making his debut against Manchester City in the FA Cup in January.

Two appearances in League Two and one in the EFL Trophy followed, with Wright making a good enough impression to seal a dream move to the reigning Premier League champions.

Liverpool have been on a spending spree so far this summer, revamping their full-back options with deals for Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez, as well as breaking the British transfer record for £116million man Florian Wirtz.

A £79m move for Hugo Ekitike followed, taking the Reds' total outlay to almost £300m.

And they could yet obliterate the £400m mark with a move for £150m-rated Alexander Isak, who is pushing to leave Newcastle United.
