Liverpool has reportedly opened talks to sign Malick Fofana from Lyon, amid interest from Manchester United and Chelsea.

The 20-year-old attacker has been identified as a player who could be sold for a significant amount of money this summer, as Lyon wrestles with financial difficulties.

Lyon, which recently offloaded Rayan Cherki to Manchester City amid interest from Liverpool, is said to want €50 million ($58 million) for Fofana, who is also said to be attracting interest from Nottingham Forest — although L'Equipe says a move to Forest does not appeal to Fofana due to the stature of the other clubs who are interested in signing him.

Fofana made 41 appearances in all competitions for Lyon this season, with 23 of them coming as starts, scoring 11 goals and registering six assists.

Most of Fofana's outings came as a left winger, and it remains to be seen whether Liverpool plans to recruit in that area of the field this summer — that will surely depend on the future of Luis Diaz, who has been linked with a move away from the Anfield club.

Diaz is the subject of interest from Barcelona, but the Catalan club has reportedly turned it's attention to Athletic Bilbao's Nico Williams after seeing an approach for Diaz knocked back by Liverpool last week.

Barcelona was said by The Athletic to have made contact with Liverpool last Wednesday over the possibility of signing Diaz, but it was met with a swift rejection as the Reds have no desire to let Diaz leave.

That's despite there being little expectation that Diaz will pen an extension to his current contract at Liverpool, which is due to expire in 2027.

Luis Diaz is admired by Barcelona

According to Capology, Diaz currently earns £55,000 ($73,000) per week, which is significantly lower than players of a similar standing in Arne Slot squad.

Liverpool has reportedly attempted to address Diaz's contract situation but little progress has been made, and rather than sell him this summer, the club would prefer to maximize his performance value over the next two years and allow him to leave for nothing following the 2026-27 season.

While Liverpool does not intend to allow Diaz to leave, the club's resolve could be tested by an offer from Al-Nassr, with the Saudi Pro League club reportedly willing to spend $97 million on him.

An offer of that magnitude could prompt club bosses to sit up and take notice, as that kind of money could allow Liverpool to sign a younger replacement for Diaz, with tentative links with Newcastle's Anthony Gordon having resurfaced of late.
