Liverpool remain on the lookout for a new manager after Jurgen Klopp stunned the world of football by confirming he will leave Anfield at the end of the season.

Klopp has pointed to a lack of ‘energy’ as a key element influencing his decision to step down.

However, the 56-year-old is undoubtedly eager to conclude his tenure on a positive note, especially as the Reds are actively contending for titles on multiple fronts this season.

The German’s departure leaves a significant void, and efforts are already underway behind the scenes to identify his successor.

Currently, Xabi Alonso is the frontrunner according to bookmakers, positioning him as the likely candidate to assume managerial responsibilities this summer.

However, Bayern Munich are poised to provide stiff competition in the pursuit of the Bayer Leverkusen manager.

This intensified interest is fueled by the imminent departure of Thomas Tuchel from the Allianz Arena, following a disappointing streak of three consecutive defeats.

New alternative identified by Liverpool

According to The Independent, “Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso and Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim are emerging as the main contenders in Liverpool’s search to replace Jurgen Klopp as manager.”

“Should Alonso decide to go elsewhere, Amorim is currently seen as the most desirable candidate.”

Amorim, who hanged his boot with Benfica in 2017, embarked on his coaching journey by joining Portuguese top-flight club Casa Pia in 2018.

Subsequently, he took on the role of manager for the ‘B’ team at Braga.

His impressive coaching acumen led to a swift promotion to the position of head coach for the senior team in 2019.

A year later, in March 2020, Amorim assumed the managerial responsibilities at Sporting.

Under his leadership, Sporting secured the Primeira Liga title in 2021, along with two Taca da Liga trophies.

In the following two seasons, the team achieved second and fourth-place finishes, securing qualification for the Champions League on both occasions.

Sporting currently hold the second position in Liga Portugal with 55 points, the same points as leaders Benfica who have played a game more.

The Independent further reports that Amorim is currently considered an ideal candidate compared to Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi.

While he may not be garnering as much attention as Alonso, Amorim is still drawing interest from prominent clubs, albeit not to the same extent as the current frontrunner.

Alonso disclosed at his pre-match press conference that had “nothing new to say” amid speculation linking him with his former clubs Bayern Munich and Liverpool.

“Maybe you have questions about my future,” said the 42-year-old before his side’s game against Mainz on Friday.

“I have nothing new to say about that.
