Ibrahima Konate endured a miserable performance for Liverpool against Bournemouth and the Reds will likely step up their pursuit of Marc Guehi.

That is the verdict of former England and Southampton striker Matt Le Tissier, who told Football Insider exclusively that the Frenchman’s poor showing will have “given Liverpool food for thought”.

Following the departure of Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen this summer, Arne Slot‘s options at centre-back are limited.

The Dutch manager has a first-choice pairing of Virgil van Dijk and Konate to call upon, but behind them, the only other options are Giovanni Leoni, who has just been signed from Parma, and the oft-injured Joe Gomez.

As such, Guehi is a target for Liverpool this summer, Pete O’Rourke told Football Insider exclusively.

The Reds and Crystal Palace are struggling to agree on a fee for the England international, but Slot’s side may be encouraged to agree a deal after Konate struggled immensely against Bournemouth.

This article contains exclusive comment from former Southampton and England striker Matt Le Tissier.

Jamie Carragher called Konate’s performance for Liverpool “shocking”, as the Reds gave up a two-goal lead to the Cherries, before some late heroics from Federico Chiesa and Mohamed Salah.

The Frenchman was repeatedly caught out of position and was sloppy in possession, misplacing simple passes.

Konate has just one year remaining on his Liverpool contract amid interest from Real Madrid, and the combination of his performance and uncertain future may encourage the Merseyside club to intensify their pursuit of Guehi, Le Tissier told Football Insider exclusively.

He said: “It’s certainly given Liverpool food for thought.

I’m sure the intensity will go up with the chase for Marc Guehi, who I think is an excellent centre-back.

“It’s a fantastic result for Liverpool, but not one of Ibrahima Konate’s finest games.”

Centre-back is not the only position lacking depth in Slot’s squad.

Despite a stunning showing from Hugo Ekitike against Bournemouth, there are few options up top aside from the Frenchman.

Alexander Isak has been the first-choice candidate for much of the summer, but Newcastle’s £150million asking price has been a major stumbling block in completing a deal for the Swedish striker.

As such, O’Rourke told Football Insider that Liverpool have emerged as surprise candidates for Yoane Wissa.

Newcastle remain the favourites to sign the Brentford striker, who has one year remaining on his deal at the GTech.
