Liverpool have registered a strong interest in AC Milan star Franck Kessie, according to reports in Italy.

Kessie is about to enter into the final 12 months of his contract at the San Siro and a sense of uncertainty has been mounting over the Ivorian's future as his agent prepares for showdown talks at Milan's offices next week.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Kessie is not threatening to pack his bags just yet but Milan are aware that the Ivory Coast international has admirers both in Italy and overseas, who will be keeping close tabs on his current situation.

The report claims Premier League giants Liverpool are especially fond, with Jurgen Klopp determined to bring in a replacement for Gini Wijnaldum before the transfer window closes.

Kessie is keen to stop the speculation becoming a distraction while away on international duty at the Tokyo Olympics and he got off to a flying start in the Ivory Coast's opening match, scoring the winning goal in a 2-1 victory over Saudi Arabia.

More: Football Milan technical director, Maldini, and director of football, Frederic Massara, are desperate to resolve Kessie's future as quickly as possible and will push for an agreement once he returns from Japan.

'Franck Kessie will stay as he's part of our future,' Maldini told reporters.
