Liverpool star Alexis Mac Allister was notably not spotted among the 21-man squad that arrived in Newcastle for their Premier League showdown at St James' Park this evening, sparking concerns for manager Arne Slot.

The Argentinean was instrumental in Liverpool's Premier League opener against Bournemouth last week, providing an assist in the 4-2 victory before being substituted off in the 72nd minute.

Mac Allister had been a doubt for the Cherries match, having recently recovered from an injury that sidelined him towards the end of last season, and it was clear Slot was eager to manage his fitness cautiously.

He did not flag the former Brighton star as an injury concern during his pre-match press conference.

New recruit Jeremie Frimpong is the only player confirmed as unavailable, while Conor Bradley's status remains uncertain following his recent return to training.

However, there are growing worries that Mac Allister may have suffered a re-occurence of his injury after he was not seen among the Liverpool stars checking into their hotel on Tyneside, where Bradley was spotted as part of the Reds' 21-man squad.

Yet, some eagle-eyed fans have pointed out that Mac Allister's wife is due to give birth in the coming days - which could account for his absence.

This will be a setback for Liverpool, who were already without his regular midfield partner Ryan Gravenberch in the opening game due to suspension.

Dominik Szoboszlai filled in alongside Mac Allister and may be called upon once again to face the Magpies.

Liverpool will be boosted by the return of Gravenberch for this match, a move that Slot believes could make a significant difference to the team's performance, acknowledging his absence "hurt them" in their game against Bournemouth.

"I think he can make a lot [of difference].

If you look back at last season, for him not being there and us playing with very good players but very attack-minded players - that hurt us [against Bournemouth].

At the moment we only have two injuries but unfortunately, it is two in the same position.

"The good thing is we have other players that can play there.
