The football world was shocked and plunged into mourning when the news broke in July that Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva had tragically passed away in a car accident.
For his teammates, the news hit harder, as they came to terms with losing not just a colleague, but an extremely close friend as well.
Diogo Jota’s humility and kindness defined him as a person, and he was deeply loved by every club that employed him throughout his career, as well as his national team.
Andy Robertson has opened up on the way he has been coping with the tragedy, as the Scotsman and Diogo Jota struck up quite the friendship during their time together at Liverpool.
“It was such a surprise, such a shock.
It was devastating for his family, first and foremost, but also devastating for us as a group of lads.”
“It’s the toughest thing we’ll ever go through.
And as long as we continue to do that, he’ll always be in our thoughts, and he’ll always be in our hearts.”
“That’s all we can do.”
Robertson was heavily linked with a move away from Liverpool this summer but any thoughts of a potential exit became irrelevant in the aftermath of such an event.
“It didn’t influence my decision
The decision was already made before the tragedy, but I knew in that moment that the club needed me.”
“I know I am one of the leaders in the team and I have obviously been made vice-captain now.”
The new Liverpool vice-captain also highlighted the importance of Liverpool’s leadership group at a time like this, stating that they will help Diogo Jota’s family if needs be.
“I know the leaders in that changing room have got a big job to do this season in terms of trying to help everyone as a club and even Diogo’s family throughout this massively difficult moment.”
