Ian Rush has reacted to the devastating news that Diogo Jota has died in a car crash, along with his brother Andre Silva.

The Liverpool striker is among the thousands of tributes that have been left for the 28-year-old this morning.

Rush, who has a club record of 346 goals in 660 appearances for the Reds shared a photo of Jota in his Liverpool kit and captioned it: "I'm deeply saddened and shocked by the heartbreaking news of the passing of Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Silva.



The comment said: "Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota.



"The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre.

"Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss.

"We will continue to provide them with our full support."

The brothers are said to have been in the Zamora region of Sanabria when the incident occurred.

It is understood the vehicle suffered a tyre blowout when heading towards Benavente, with Zamora News reporting that emergency services were called to the scene shortly before 1am on Thursday morning.

According to the Zamora provincial council, firefighters attended the scene on the A52, known as the Palacios de Sanabria, after the vehicle caught fire.

Jota was a popular figure among Liverpool fans, even having his own chant related to his number 20 shirt.

He also lifted the FA Cup, Community Shield and the Carabao Cup twice with Liverpool.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher wrote on Instagram: "Absolutely devastated by the sad news about Diogo Jota.

Condolences to his family and friends during this incredibly sad time." A picture shared by the former Red's captain showed Jota and his family on the pitch during the Premier League title celebrations in May.

Jota married his long term partner Rute Cardoso on June 22 in Portugal.
