Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has been named the 'preferred' candidate to take over as Rangers manager ahead of next season.
In summer 2023 the former Reds captain signed a lucrative deal in the Gulf state and was backed considerably in the transfer market, but could not deliver what was hoped.
It was a similar story beforehand at Aston Villa, where he was unable to advance the club 's fortunes in the Premier League during a stint which lasted only a year.

Between 2018 and 2021, Gerrard's first senior post in management was at Ibrox.
In his final full season, 2020/21, he lead the club to their first Scottish Premiership title in a decade.
What made the achievement that much more special was the fact Rangers went unbeaten all year long whilst preventing bitter rivals Celtic from winning their 10th consecutive title.

Such success has evaded the Glasgow club since the former Liverpool midfielder departed for Villa Park, now The Daily Mail suggest a reunion is poised to happen.
Rangers have been forced to end the season with an interim manager, Barry Ferguson, who is now confirmed to be departing.
The club are immediately stepping up their search for a permanent replacement in time for pre-season beginning on June 23.
The recruitment process is reportedly being led by new sporting director Kevin Thelwell, formerly of Everton, and chief executive Patrick Stewart.
Gretar Steinsson of 49ers Enterprises also has a level of input.

And it is said that the 'preferred' candidate will already have experience in management.
Another on the shortlist, Real Madrid assistant and son of Carlo Ancelotti, Davide, does not possess this, so Gerrard has emerged as the preference.
