Toronto signed Liverpool defender Tony Gallacher on loan in September despite initially scouting his team-mate Adam Lewis.
But Toronto head of scouting operations Jack Dodd, who worked as a scout at Liverpool between 2008-2013 and struck up a relationship with current assistant sporting director Julian Ward, explained Gallacher was not his initial target.
Toronto took up base in Hartford, Connecticut across the border in the United States meaning the 21-year-old former Falkirk left-back - who signed for Liverpool in 2018 - barely experienced living in Canada.
Gallacher went on to make 10 appearances in the MLS while having to deal with the coronavirus pandemic - which forced him to quarantine alone for a fortnight upon arrival - and a temporary stadium move for his new club to comply with travel restrictions.
"Everyone at the club loved him.
Dodd added: "It's certainly a relationship I hope to build on with Liverpool and I would hope Julian felt the same.
