Liverpool have made a decision on what the future holds for versatile midfielder Wataru Endo amid interest in his services from clubs in Germany.

The Reds have made some key summer business this summer as they look to replicate their recent Premier League title-winning campaign in the upcoming season.

Arne Slot has brought in the likes of Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez, while also moving to allow Trent Alexander-Arnold, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez all to leave, among others.

More exits are bound to be confirmed soon, and Japanese international midfielder Endo’s future has been one of intrigue and debate, especially after he made just one start in the Premier League last term.

The 32-year-old, who joined Liverpool from Stuttgart in 2023, has seen competition for places in midfield arrive in the form of Wirtz, while Trey Nyoni is now a part of Slot’s first-team plans, and a decision has seemingly now been made on where he will be playing in 2025/26.

Liverpool fans have previously praised Endo for the work he does on the pitch that often goes unnoticed, and he was an unsung hero of the Reds’ recent success as he featured 20 times in the Premier League last term.

Despite new competition for places in the middle of the park joining the Merseyside club, it seems as if he will be going nowhere this summer, with talkSPORT (12 August) revealing that the Japanese international has “no plans to up sticks” despite interest from clubs in his services from Eintracht Frankfurt and other clubs in Germany this summer.

Their report states that Endo is likely to have to settle for another season of being a squad player at Anfield, but sources close to him insist that he and his family are settled on Merseyside, while Slot also wants to keep him due to his versatility and ability to play in defence, especially at centre-back, as well as in midfield.

Football Insider verdict

Liverpool’s centre-back saga is one that has already waged on throughout the summer and is bound to continue up until transfer deadline day, but with Endo set to remain at the club, the likelihood is that he will be viewed as an option to play there going forward.

The 32-year-old started a game at the heart of Slot’s defence on three occasions last season, including in the first-leg of the Carabao Cup semi-finals against Spurs, so it is clear that the Dutchman sees him as a genuine option there despite his lack of height compared to many others in the position.

Football Insider recently revealed that Liverpool will attempt to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace late in the window, amid ongoing interest in his signature, but his capture would still only leave them with three fit senior centre-backs amid Joe Gomez’s injury troubles.

Endo is clearly a good character to have around the dressing room at Anfield, and one that has proven to be a successful back-up in a number of positions, so Liverpool’s decision to keep him around does feel like a no-brainer this summer.
