Liverpool has reportedly tabled a second, improved offer for Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz.
The Reds are expected to complete the signing of the German international but it appears the clubs remain some distance apart in their valuation.
According to Bild, Liverpool’s opening offer of opening bid of £85million ($115M) was rejected earlier this week, but the Reds have since submitted an enhanced offer.
Bild claims that bid is for around £100M ($135M) with up to £12M ($16M) in possible add-ons.
It is said that Leverkusen’s asking price is closer to the £126M ($170M) mark, but it’s hoped that price could drop given the transfer is not to a fellow Bundesliga side.
Regardless, Wirtz’s signing looks set to shatter Liverpool’s transfer record, which was previously held by Darwin Nunez.
Ironically, the Leverkusen star could ultimately end up being Nunez’s long-term replacement in the side.
Wirtz, who was chosen this week as the Bundesliga player of the season ahead of Harry Kane, can play as an attacking midfielder, false nine and striker.
Meanwhile, reports in Munich-based Suddeutsche Zeitung state Wirtz’s concerns over where he would fit in the Bayern team alongside Jamal Musiala were pivotal in his decision to choose Liverpool over Bayern.
Arne Slot is also said to have convinced the player to sign for Liverpool with a detailed breakdown of his tactical plan and where Wirtz would fit into it.
The attacker is set to join alongside teammate Jeremie Frimpong, whose move from Leverkusen is expected to be announced soon.
