All eyes have been on Liverpool during this summer’s transfer market, as Arne Slot aims to go even better next season.
The Reds were unexpected title winners during Slot’s first term in charge, but few will be quite so surprised if that success is repeated next time around.
Part of the reason for that is the arrival of Florian Wirtz in a club record deal from Bayer Leverkusen.
Wirtz is one of European football’s biggest talents and his move to Liverpool garnered headlines across the world on Friday.
But while Wirtz’s addition will make the Liverpool squad better next season, he cannot do anything alone.
He will need the help of a star-studded support cast.
And while the German was putting pen to paper on his contract with Liverpool on Friday, there was some quietly brilliant news emerging about one of those supporting players.

With Wirtz now secured and Milos Kerkez set to join Liverpool next week, attention for the Reds will turn to bolstering the defence.
Once Jarell Quansah completes his expected move to Bayer Leverkusen, Liverpool will need to sign a replacement.
But, thankfully, it appears that Quansah’s fellow back-up defender, Joe Gomez, is now more likely to stay.

Gomez penned a heartfelt message on Instagram on Friday as he celebrated 10 years with the Reds.
And although it can be a fool’s errand to read too much into such things, the tone did suggest he is not planning on going anywhere.

While that news is clearly not as exciting as a record signing jetting in, it should still be seen as a significant positive for Slot.

Before his injury in December, Gomez once again proved just how good he can be at centre-back last season.
Having him around to fill in at left-back could also be beneficial given the interest in Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas.
Quality, versatile players like Gomez do not grow on trees and if the 28-year-old is happy to remain as back-up for yet another season, that is super news for Liverpool.
At various points over the past three or four years, it has felt like Gomez’s time with Liverpool may be coming to an end.
However, after a season mostly spent on the sidelines, it seems unlikely any club will stump up the valuation Liverpool would expect to let him go.
Meanwhile, his ability to play across the whole of the back line could once again be crucial.
Changes at left and right-back as well as potentially in the middle, means there may be need for an old head like Gomez.
Konate’s fitness may have improved last season, but there is no guarantee the Frenchman can stay fit for a full campaign either.
As he showed last season, Gomez is the perfect player to step in for 15 or 20 games per season.
If Liverpool were to need to replace Gomez they would surely have to pay a bomb to get him.
