Liverpool have added another huge addition to their squad this summer.

The Reds have been chasing a striker all summer long and the player they have decided to make a move for is Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike.

The Frenchman will cost Liverpool £69m plus a potential of a further £10m in add-ons, with fans hoping that the 23-year-old can put an end to their striker curse.

However, it is funny how if one small detail is changed, the chain of events afterwards may never occur, and this is the case with Ekitike’s move to Liverpool.

Reds fans may want to thank the Frenchman’s former teammate Kylian Mbappe as if he never said this one thing to him, he may never have ended up at Anfield.

After excelling in Ligue 1 with Stade Reims, Ekitike got the opportunity to prove himself at the biggest club in France as PSG took a punt on him, a punt that did not work out.

The striker endured a tricky year-and-a-half in the capital as he struggled to break into the team ahead of the likes of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Mbappe.

And, if it was not for the latter, Ekitike may have stayed a little while longer to see if things improved, but Mbappe urged him to leave for the sake of his own career.

“I have become a better footballer and a better person because of him [Mbappe],” Ekitike said during his Frankfurt unveiling as per SPORTbible.

“I watched him a lot, and he gave me a lot of tips on where I could improve.

He recommended that I take the next step and advised me to come here to progress and develop.”

Without this intervention, Ekitike may never have moved to Frankfurt and set the Bundesliga alight, showing the butterfly effect in full swing.

Mbappe may not exactly be a popular figure at Anfield, but Reds fans may just have to thank him for his small contribution.

With the new season just under a month away, Ekitike still has plenty of chances to make his debut for the club, with this likely coming during the Reds’ pre-season tour of Asia.

Liverpool’s game against AC Milan on Saturday 26th July will likely come too soon for the Frenchman, but he could feature in their game against Yokohama F Marinos four days later.

If not, the Reds also have two friendlies against Athletic Club at Anfield on 4th August, as well as the Community Shield against Crystal Palace on 10th August.

Ekitike is certainly an exciting signing ahead of a huge season, but fans will be hoping he can get some minutes in the tank so he can hit the ground running.
