Liverpool midfielder James McConnell has joined Ajax on a season-long loan.

McConnell made 13 senior appearances for the Premier League champions following his breakthrough under Jurgen Klopp in the 2023/24 season.

But the 20-year-old suffered an ankle injury last summer which all but ended any hopes of him gaining further experience away from the Anfield ranks.

He made just four outings in all competitions for Arne Slot’s side after being passed fit for action ahead of December’s Champions League trip to Girona.

Now McConnell is set to build up his frontline game time by reuniting with ex-Reds coach John Heitinga, who is now in charge of the Amsterdam club.

He is the second player to move to the Johan Cruyff Arena on loan from Merseyside this summer following Vitezslav Jaros’ move earlier this summer.

Ahead of his switch to the Netherlands, McConnell signed a new long-term contract which is understood to safeguard his future at Anfield until 2030.

Meanwhile Liverpool have granted Kostas Tsimikas permission to open talks over a potential loan switch to Roma before Monday’s transfer deadline.

The Greek international’s chances of vying for the left-back position were dealt a blow by Milos Kerkez’s arrival as fresh competition to Andy Robertson.

Tsimikas, 29, has failed to feature for Arne Slot’s side in the matchday squads for their opening two Premier League outings and the Community Shield.

He is now expected to pursue a loan switch to Roma, who are expected to cover his salary for the course of the year-long spell with the Serie A outfit.
