Jay Spearing made a surprise return to Liverpool last summer as a player-coach, re-joining his boyhood club in an innovative new role nine years on from leaving Anfield for Bolton Wanderers in a reported £1.75m deal. The 34-year-old returned to the Reds following his release from Tranmere Rovers, with the new post seeing him help coach the Under-18s side and younger age groups, while also being available for selection exclusively for the club’s Under-21s side as an overage player. The development role has been initiated by youth director Alex Inglethorpe, with the academy director keen to bring the midfielder back to the club in such a role. bosses were said to be delighted to have him on board and saw Spearing as the perfect role-model for the club’s younger players to aid them make the step from promising academy player to being able to play for the Reds’ first team or pursue a senior career elsewhere.

Fortunately, Spearing was swiftly on the mend and back with his family, before returning to work at the Liverpool Academy in 2023.
