On May 28 2018, Liverpool announced a $55m (£44m/€51m) deal for Monaco midfielder Fabinho. From the outside, it seemed like a whirlwind transfer, with the first news of talks emerging just hours before the deal was complete. It escalated at a speed not usually seen outside transfer deadline day. However, Liverpool had clearly been laying the groundwork for the move for a while, impressively managing to keep it under wraps until the final stages.
