Liverpool has won seven of its last eight games, but its late push for a top-four finish has come up short. On Thursday night, thrashed Chelsea 4-1 to secure football and officially condemn Liverpool to the Europa League. With only one game remaining, Liverpool sits four points behind fourth-place who can no longer be caught. The Reds hold the same margin to Brighton behind, meaning they are already locked into fifth before they travel to on Sunday.

In addition to the reduced prestige of the Europa League, there will be a financial hit to absorb too. Figures from show that Liverpool will net just $4m(£3.2m/€3.7m) in prize money for reaching the group stage, compared to more than $17m (£14m/€16m) for the Champions League.



There is, however, some solace for the club in that it won't have to pay the squad bonuses associated with Champions League qualification.
