Liverpool recently confirmed the sales of Taiwo Awoniyi and Marko Gruji? for a combined total of £17 million.

However, it can be a risky strategy: just ask Chelsea, Romelu Lukaku and Kevin De Bruyne.

De Bruyne fetched £18 million from Wolfsburg, while Lukaku left to Everton for £28 million after a successful loan spell at Goodison Park.

Taiwo Awoniyi and Marko Gruji? are unlikely to go on to hit such heights, but Liverpool’s emerging develop/loan/sell conveyor belt raises the risk of letting a star of Lukaku or De Bruyne proportions slip through the net.

The London club let both of the Belgians leave after successful loan spells.

Gruji? has managed a slightly better eight Premier League appearances since joining the club five years ago, but has also been the subject of a series of loan moves.

Casual fans could be forgiven for not having heard of at least one of these players: Awoniyi has somehow been at the club for six years now, but work permit issues have meant that his first time linking up with the squad was this short-lived pre-season in Austria.
