Liverpool are closing in on a deal to sign Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt.

Arne Slot's side are putting the finishing touches on a second bid - believed to be £78million plus add-ons - for the 23-year-old.

The Reds are confident that Frankfurt are going to accept the club's latest proposal for Ekitike, who has agreed personal terms on a six-year contract.

"It is quite possible that this will also be a thing of the past."

Liverpool have spent almost £200m this summer on getting players through the door.

Germany international attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz has been signed for a club record £116m, Bayer Leverkusen team-mate and Holland right-back Jeremie Frimpong cost £29m and Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez £40m.

Wirtz, Frimpong, Kerkez and Ekitike are expected to take Slot's Liverpool squad right to the next level, as they prepare to defend their Premier League crown.

In an attempt to address that, Slot's side have spent more than £250m on attacking players.

Wirtz and Ekitike are set to come straight into Liverpool's first-choice starting XI and strengthen the attack.

Former Leverkusen man Wirtz would slot into the No.10 berth, while Ekitike would be the No.9.

Mohamed Salah, who scored 34 goals and provided 23 assists in 52 appearances last season, would start on the right-hand side, while one of Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz would be used on the left.

That would leave Darwin Nunez, who has been linked with a summer exit, as the back-up striker and Federico Chiesa as another option either on the right or in the attacking midfield position.

However, Liverpool's new-look attack could change further should Diaz leave the club.
