Liverpool news: Jurgen Klopp reveals defensive dilemma ahead of Brighton clash

The Liverpool manager will be without Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren for their trip to Brighton on Saturday,

And midfielder Fabinho might be forced to fill in as he did in the 2-1 defeat by Wolves in the FA Cup.

"If Fabinho has to play as a Centre-back, we work on that on the training pitch,” Klopp said.

“But we try not to make it more complicated than it is.

“If Fabinho has to play as a centre-half what we want is the natural understanding of the game.

“If you are a holding 6 or a centre-half with the ball it is easier.”

With Manchester City not playing until Monday (at home to Wolves), Liverpool can stretch their lead at the top of the Premier League to seven points with a win at the Amex Stadium.

Klopp’s side go into the clash as big favourites but Klopp insists he will not take Chris Houghton’s side lightly.

“It’s really difficult in the Premier League to be in the position they are in and not have the money,” the German added.

“(Lewis) Dunk and (Shane) Duffy are outstanding centre-halves. (Davy) Propper is playing his best season in England is is a good pairing with (Dale) Stephens.

“It is just a good team. They are in the shadow of all other teams but then you think ‘oh right, we could have had this player as well.’

“We will try everything to win that game.”

Liverpool remain favourites for the title this season after watching City run away with it in the last campaign.

And Klopp admits being the frontrunners has provided him with a new challenge.

“That’s normal. Every year is the same,” he said.

“Last year when we fought for the Champions League everything was fine and then Chelsea found their feet and it was really difficult.

“As long as you can stay completely focused and completely with yourself the better it is.

“So far that is what we try to do and it has been pretty easy for us to stay focused.

“There is no game in the Premier League where you can count the three points beforehand. I like that. It is good.”
