Liverpool branded Sevilla's behaviour 'a disgrace' after Yasser Larouci, a highly-regarded young defender, was put on crutches following a horror challenge.

Larouci, who was a member of the squad that won last season's FA Youth Cup, was kicked up in the air by Sevilla defender Joris Gnagnon midway through the second half of his side's 2-1 defeat in Boston.

Jurgen Klopp would not discuss the tackle, for which Gnagnon apologised on Twitter, but there was a depth of ill-feeling within the squad about a number of incidents.

Nothing was more alarming than the way Gnagnon chopped Larouci down.

It left Virgil van Dijk and James Milner, the two vice-captains, enraged.

Remarkably, Sevilla head coach Julen Lopetegui said he did not see the flashpoint but did explain that Gnagnon was contrite when returning to the dressing room; that point was proven when Gnagnon took to social media to express his remorse.

'I would like to apologise publicly to the player and to Liverpool,' said Gnagnon, whose message was followed by a more general one from Sevilla's official account.
