Brendan Rodgers denies Gerrard claim after Liverpool heartbreak

Brendan Rodgers has said he had no prior knowledge of Steven Gerrard’s back injury ahead of the Premier League title decider against Chelsea in 2014.

Liverpool were going for the title and after important victories against Manchester City and Norwich the Reds were set to host Jose Mourinho’s side at Anfield.

Gerrard started the match despite the discomfort he had suffered in the days leading up to the game. He then infamously slipped and lost possession of the ball allowing Demba Ba to profit and put Chelsea into a 1-0 lead. It was a game which Mourinho’s men would go on to win 2-0, all but ending the iconic midfielder’s hopes of lifting a maiden title.

In his 2016 autobiography, ‘Steven Gerrard: My Story’, the now-Rangers boss confirmed he had been suffering from a back complaint in the lead up to the match - something Rodgers has admitted he didn’t know about.

Gerrard wrote: “If we had been facing Oldham Athletic in an FA Cup tie, rather than Chelsea in a title decider, the decision would have been made. I would have been out of the game.

“For the previous three days I had been suffering from a sore and inflamed back. And the, out of nowhere, the hurt became so acute it felt as if I could not bend over or even move. Hours later I was still pinned to the spot. In agony. I could not even haul myself up and hobble towards bed.”

The legendary midfielder goes on to describe the medication he was taking in order to deal with the discomfort and ready himself for the clash. Confirming also he had to receive an injection from Doctor Zafar Iqbal to help ease the pain.

But speaking to The Beautiful Game Podcast, Rodgers explained he didn’t know of Gerrard’s discomfort.
