Liverpool will next week discover the start of the road they hope will lead to Champions League glory.
And there could be an unexpected reunion on the cards after the first leg of the play-offs was completed.
Simon Mignolet, who made 204 appearances during six years with the Reds, helped Club Brugge to a shock 3-1 win at Rangers at Ibrox on Tuesday to put the Belgians in a strong position to progress.
Former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers, now in his second spell in charge at Celtic, has a more difficult task with the Glasgow side having been held to a goalless draw at home to unfancied FC Kairat from Kazakhstan.

Another manager with Anfield links, ex-Reds striker Robbie Keane, saw his Ferencvaros side, for whom Naby Keita was an unused substitute, beaten 3-1 at home by Qarabag of Azerbaijan.
There will almost certainly be a new name in the Champions League proper with Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt, who have previously never gone beyond the play-offs but did reach the Europa League semi-finals last season, thrashing Sturm Graz of Austria 5-0.
With seven clubs progressing from the play-offs to the league stage, the other three ties are very much in the balance.
Basel and Copenhagen played out a 1-1 draw, while Fenerbahce and Benfica had a goalless stalemate in Turkey.

But there was a surprise when Cypriot side Pafos, featuring for the first time in the Champions League, won 2-1 at Red Star Belgrade.
The second legs will be played next Tuesday and Wednesday, with the draw for the league stage then taking place in Monaco next Thursday at 6pm.
As with last season, a total of 36 teams will make up the initial league stage.
Each will play eight games against different opposition, with four at home and four away.
Clubs from the same country cannot face each other, with the draw for the fixtures split into teams playing two opponents from each of the four pots, which are determined by UEFA coefficient - the record of each club in European competition over the last five years.
Liverpool already know they are in pot one where they are joined by English rivals Manchester City and Chelsea, Spanish duo Real Madrid and Barcelona, German teams Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, and this season's finalists PSG and Inter.
The remaining Premier League clubs Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United are provisionally in pots 2, 3 and 4 respectively, while Atletico Madrid, Villarreal and Athletic Bilbao have all qualified from Spain.

Italy is further represented by Napoli, Atalanta and Juventus, while Bayer Leverkusen and Eintracht Frankfurt complete the German quartet.
PSV Eindhoven and Ajax have qualified from Holland, Marseille and Monaco are in from France and Sporting Lisbon from Portugal.
Olympiakos of Greece, Slavia Prague of Czechia, Turkish side Galatasaray and Belgian outfit Union Saint-Gilloise make up the remainder.
The final of next season's Champions League will take place in Budapest on May 30.
