Liverpool Football Club
The pain of losing a player is something no football club ever prepares for.
At Liverpool, the grief has been overwhelming following the tragic passing of Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Silva.
Jota wasn’t just a number on the team sheet.
He was a vital player, loved by the squad and fans, and deeply involved in the club’s recent success across all competitions.
His work rate, finishing, and selflessness made him a fan favourite.
Since the heartbreaking news, supporters around the world have come together in solidarity.
Anfield quickly became the centre of that mourning, with thousands of fans visiting to lay tributes—flowers, scarves, jerseys, artwork.
Rival fans also joined in.
The memorial space outside Anfield became more than a tribute—it became a symbol of football’s unity.
But now, the club is taking steps to ensure Jota’s memory will never fade.
After consulting with Jota’s family, Liverpool have confirmed the number 20 shirt will be retired across all levels of the club—“including LFC Women and the Academy.”
The club said this is being done “in honour and memory of Diogo.”
The tribute area outside Anfield has also been cleared over the last week.
All items have been “carefully separated and safely stored.”
Floral tributes will be composted and used “in flower beds across all club sites, including Anfield, the AXA Training Centre and AXA Melwood Training Centre.”
Other artefacts will be recycled and used to create “a permanent memorial sculpture that will become a future focal point of remembrance at Anfield.”
A “temporary area of reflection has been created at Anfield” where fans can still visit and pay respects.
Supporters who print ‘Diogo J.
20’ on their shirts through the club’s official stores will have their money go to the LFC Foundation.
The foundation has pledged to create “a grassroots football programme in Diogo’s name.”
The club will also pay tribute in all pre-season games.
For the Asia tour, players will wear shirts with a “specially designed patch that will display ‘Diogo J?
20’,” and floral tributes will be laid in “Hong Kong, Tokyo and Anfield.”
When the new kits are launched on August 1, a “Forever 20” emblem will be printed inside the players’ shirts and jackets for the season.
The main tribute will come on August 15, during the Premier League opener against Bournemouth at Anfield.
A special fan mosaic and a minute of silence are planned.
Liverpool say “further details will be shared with supporters in due course.”
“Once again, the club would like to thank everyone for their continued support.”
