Liverpool’s transfer business this summer has taken many by surprise.

With some £269m in transfer fees committed this summer, it is the biggest outlay in a single window for owners Fenway Sports Group.

Arriving at Anfield is Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimping, Florian Wirtz, Armin Pecsi and Hugo Ekitike, while the club continues to chase Newcastle United’s talismanic striker Alexander Isak, while remaining on the lookout for additional cover at centre back.

There have been departures, with Caoimhin Kelleher, Jarell Quansah and Luis Diaz out of the door, while Darwin Nunez is expected to follow at some stage this summer, and question marks remaining over the long-term futures of the likes of Harvey Elliott, Ben Doak and Tyler Morton.

According to Transfermarkt, the Reds’ current squad market value stands €1.15bn (£990m), and that takes into account the exit of Diaz to Bayern Munich on Wednesday for a fee that could rise to £70m.

One more player through the door will take the club’s market value to over £1bn for the first time, with the club’s squad cost - which is not its current market value but how much was paid in total to assemble the team - reaching its highest level ever for 2025/26 after it was shown to have fallen below the £787m 2022/23 high in 2023/24, where it stood at £749m, with a similar figure expected for 2024/25.

According to Transfermarkt’s metrics, the Reds’ squad market value is the fifth highest in Europe, with Real Madrid topping the list at £1.18bn, while Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea take up spots two, three and four.

Liverpool want Isak, but whether a deal can be done to make that happen is another matter.

The Magpies are expected to try and hold out for £150m plus if anyone tests their resolve, although the Swede agitating for a move away from Tyneside may reduce some of their leverage.

Transfermarkt have Isak’s market value at €120m (£103.6m), which seems low compared to other deals that have happened in the window when you take into account the premium paid on strikers, and in particular those who are of proven Premier League quality.

Such a move would take Liverpool over the £1bn mark, and it would also, after the exits of Diaz and potentially Nunez, mean the squad cost tipped over the £800m mark for the very first time in the club’s history.
