It has been a frenetic week for Liverpool supporters, with seismic transfer developments reshaping the club’s summer plans.
Jeremie Frimpong’s £29.5 million move from Bayer Leverkusen is all but confirmed, with DaveOCKOP revealing that the medical had been passed on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Florian Wirtz rumours have escalated dramatically, with “bosses around Michael Edwards” reportedly flying to Boston to secure FSG’s approval for a £126 million bid.
Leverkusen’s playmaker, who amassed 31 goal contributions in 2024/25, met with Liverpool officials last week, though Bayern Munich remain a fierce competitor.
Additionally, Darwin Nunez reportedly agreed to join Atlético Madrid after private talks, with personal terms settled.
It remains to see what figure Liverpool hold out for the Uruguayan, whose seven-goal campaign frustrated fans, potentially funding a revamp under Arne Slot.
And the links have not stopped regarding Liverpool.
Now fresh report from Foot Mercato has claimed that Liverpool’s search for defensive reinforcements has led them to keep tabs on Benfica’s rising star Tomás Araújo.
However, Paris Saint-Germain is currently the club who have laid the most groundwork for the center-back.
PSG’s long-standing interest in Araújo dates back to 2024, when they initially explored a move before settling for Milan Škriniar.
With Marquinhos potentially departing and Luis Enrique demanding a right-footed center-back capable of balancing defense and build-up play, Araújo’s profile has resurfaced as a priority.
The Parisians appreciate his tactical flexibility -Araújo started the season as a center-back before shifting to right-back following Alexander Bah’s injury in February, where he excelled in both defensive duties and overlapping runs.
While no formal bid has been lodged from PSG, his €80 million release clause will likely complicate negotiations with Benfica.
For Liverpool, the 23-year-old is an option for central defense after missing out on Dean Huijsen to Real Madrid.
This season, Araújo has been a linchpin for Benfica, making 28 Primeira Liga appearances and keeping 13 clean sheets while averaging 2.73 tackles and 1.12 interceptions per 90 minutes.
Tomás Araújo?
Based on 2311 minutes played [FBref].
Standing 1.87m, Araújo combines raw athleticism with line breaking-passing as seen by his progressive statistics.
He has been described as a “diamond” by Football Talent Scout.
Medical due diligence will need to be held, however.
Araújo’s pubalgia issue – a lingering groin injury – hasn’t required surgery but caused periodic discomfort, notably limiting his minutes in April.
This could be a potential red flag for the club’s recruitment team.
