Liverpool have opened talks with Eintracht Frankfurt over a potential move for striker Hugo Ekitike.

The Reds are looking to refashion their forward line this summer with Ekitike and Newcastle United's Alexander Isak their leading targets.

While Liverpool are long-time admirers of Isak, Newcastle remain steadfast in their resolve not to sell the player during this transfer window despite the Reds willing to make an offer in excess of £100million for the Sweden international.

And the Reds have now turned their immediate attention to Ekitike, the 23-year-old Frenchman who has become one of Europe's most in-demand forwards after an impressive spell with Frankfurt in which he helped them to Champions League qualification.

Discussions have taken place between Liverpool and Frankfurt during the last 48 hours with the expectation a bid will now follow.

Intriguingly, Newcastle also want to sign Ekitike and saw an offer of €80m (£69.4m) rejected on Tuesday by Frankfurt.

The Bundesliga side want nearer to €100m (£86.7m) for a player who started his career at Reims and then spent 18 months at Paris Saint-Germain before moving to Germany at the start of 2024.

Liverpool are in the market for at least one centre forward this summer with Darwin Nunez expected to leave.

While reports have suggested Napoli are now out of the running, Serie A rivals AC Milan and Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal retain an interest.

Luis Diaz, who spent parts of last season as centre forward, is wanted by both Barcelona and Bayern Munich, with the latter expected to return with an improved offer having seen a €67.5m bid (£58.6m) dismissed by Liverpool earlier this week.

And there are doubts over the long-term Anfield future of Federico Chiesa while the Reds are also having to cope with the death of Diogo Jota, who was killed along with his brother Andre Silva in a car crash earlier this month.
