Speaking from hospital, Trotter told BBC News he was in "absolute agony".

Merseyside Police are questioning a 53-year-old suspect, who they say is a "white male" from the Liverpool area and it is being treated as a lone, isolated incident, not terrorism-related.

Speaking at a late-night press conference, Dave Kitchin from North West Ambulance Service confirmed that 27 people had been taken to hospital by ambulance.

"We can confirm that our teams treated 20 patients at the scene for minor injuries, and these did not need hospital treatment," he said.

"Twenty-seven patients in total were taken to hospital by ambulance, and we believe two of those, including one of the children, have sustained serious injuries."

Liverpool City Metro Mayor Steve Rotherham provided an update on Tuesday morning, confirming that four people are still "very ill in hospital".

He told BBC Radio 5 Live: "We are hoping of course that they pull through."

When asked if that figure reflects an increase on the previous number of people seriously injured, Rotherham replied: "No, not directly, but of course we're in liaison with the police and with the ambulance services.

Last night they had two gold command meetings - one was really late in the evening, so this morning I'll get some updates."

Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims from Merseyside Police detailed the incident and asked those on social media not to spread misinformation about the incident, urging instead for any relevant information to be passed on to the investigation team.

"The car stopped at the scene and a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area was arrested," Sims said.

What I can tell you is that we believe this to be an isolated incident and we are not currently looking for anyone else in relation to it.

"The incident is not being treated as terrorism.

We would ask that people refrain from sharing distressing footage from the incident online and please share any information directly with our investigation team."
