His Champions League debut campaign yielded six goals in nine appearances, with the remarkable achievement of being named man of the match in five of his first nine UEFA Champions League outings.

Wirtz is viewed as the creative force Liverpool need, especially as the club looks to add attacking invention to replace the influence of Trent Alexander-Arnold in advanced areas.

Liverpool are desperate to sign him and were willing to include a player to the deal that will bring Wirtz to the club.

First team stars Harvey Elliott and Jarell Quansah were reported to be options Bayer Leverkusen were considering in the deal.

However, the latest report from Sky Germany is that Elliott is no longer an option for Leverkusen.
