As Liverpool continue to be locked in a battle to sign Marc Guehi before transfer deadline day, some eyes may have turned longingly towards the Bundesliga on Saturday.

The Reds left themselves with work to do at centre-back after selling Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen.

Quansah has since arguably been replaced by Giovanni Leoni, but with the Italian still only 18, it is easy to understand why Liverpool want Guehi as well.

In the meantime, Quansah has been starring for Leverkusen.

The 22-year-old had a good pre-season for Erik ten Hag and followed that up with a goal on his Bundesliga debut on Saturday

Unsurprisingly, Quansah’s first official strike for Leverkusen came via his head.

It took the Liverpool academy graduate only six minutes to get on the scoresheet for his new club.

But although Ten Hag’s team went on to lose 2-1 against Hoffenheim, members of the Liverpool squad were still happy for their former teammate after the game.

Quansah’s life away from Liverpool could not have got off to a better start.

A debut goal right at the beginning of the game must have put the centre-back in dreamland.

Unfortunately, things did not continue in the same manner, and a home defeat will sting a Leverkusen side who are now used to winning in the Bundesliga.

Nevertheless, the goal will remain special for Quansah, and was made even more poignant after he performed Diogo Jota’s signature celebration following his header.

“Not the result we wanted today.

1st goal was for you, 20,” Quansah posted on Instagram alongside a photo of him celebrating.

Curtis Jones, Conor Bradley, Harvey Elliott and Ryan Gravenberch were all in the comments, each leaving a variation of one, two or three love hearts.

Former Liverpool players Adrian and Tyler Morton also posted similar replies, letting Quansah know they were thinking of both him and, always, Diogo.

Given Liverpool’s struggles at centre-back over the summer window, Quansah’s goal only served to underline what a talent they have let go.

However, while the reaction from supporters may be predictable, this does not mean Liverpool were wrong to sell the youngster.

Arne Slot clearly did not rate Quansah quite as highly as some others at the club, and if he was not going to play, then the Reds were right to accept a good offer from Leverkusen.

Liverpool have a buyback clause on Quansah which could see him return to Anfield in the future.

But, for now, it is within everyone’s best interests for the defender to get out and play.

The result was not the best for Leverkusen, but it already seems as though Quansah made the right decision for himself.
