Liverpool players respond to Harvey Elliott update after bizarre squad number decision

Harvey Elliott left Liverpool on transfer deadline day - and now he is preparing to make his Aston Villa debut.

However, Unai Emery's side have a £35 million obligation to buy at the end of the deal.

The ECHO also understands that the Reds have both a buy-back option and a sell-on clause as part of the deal.

Ahead of the game, the 22-year-old has taken to social media to share pictures of himself in training with Villa, along with the caption: “Working towards the weekend.



Looking forward to seeing you soon Villans!”

Former Liverpool teammates were quick to show their support, with Curtis Jones, Jeremie Frimpong, Alexis Mac Allister, Jayden Danns, Rio Ngumoha, Trey Nyoni, Rhys Williams, Kaide Gorddon, Stefan Bajcetic, Wataru Endo and Cody Gakpo all liking the Instagram post.

Caoimhin Kelleher, Tyler Morton, Kostas Tsimikas, and Naby Keita also ‘liked’ the post, while in the comments, Morton wrote: “Numberrrrr 9”.

The comment refers to the midfielder being handed the number nine shirt at Villa Park.

“It feels incredible,” Elliott told VillaTV after joining the club.

“First and foremost, I want to thank everyone for making this happen.

"Playing for a massive club like Aston Villa is every kid’s dream.
