Jurgen Klopp has admitted that had Liverpool signed Nabil Fekir in the summer of 2018, then the club may have missed out on Alisson Becker.

Fekir, then at Real Betis, was the transfer saga of that summer for Reds fans, who watched as the attacker came within a whisker of sealing a £52m move to Anfield.

Official club photos had already been taken, only for the transfer to fall through at the 11th hour.

Liverpool would move on from Fekir, though, adding Xherdan Shaqiri, Fabinho and Naby Keita to the £75m signing of Virgil van Dijk, who joined six months earlier, in January.

But it was the £65m addition of Alisson Becker who proved to be one of the most important signings in modern Liverpool history, the Brazilian goalkeeper having a transformative impact on a side that had lost the 2018 Champions League final to Real Madrid after two huge errors from then first choice Loris Karius.

And Klopp, speaking in Liverpool's new documentary on Alisson's career, says the signing from Roma was his "dream" transfer.

He said: "We all know the story around the Champions League final.

And that was the moment we said: ‘Okay, we have to try it’.

“The interesting part is that we were close to signing Fekir.

And if we sign Fekir, we don’t have the money for Ali.

“It was obviously a pretty important decision for the future of LFC!”

It's fair to say that Alisson, who has gone on to make 298 appearances for Liverpool, winning every major trophy on offer and famously scoring once, made a huge first impression on his new manager.

Indeed, Klopp admits he was blown away by Alisson after watching him up close in his first training session with the club, with then-goalkeeper coach John Achterberg, who had a huge influence on Liverpool's recruitment of goalkeepers, also delighted.

He said: "We spoke obviously before, just on the phone, but I was so impressed by the god.

‘Oh, that’s possible?

Great’.

“We were a bit like kids in a candy shop, ‘oh my god, what did we get here?’.

“John Achterberg, it’s like he got a Christmas present, ‘oh my god, Alisson Becker is now around!’.”
