Last week, Sky Sports reported that Liverpool held an interest in star Aston Villa man Morgan Rogers.
Since joining Villa from Middlesbrough in February 2024 for £8 million, Rogers has evolved into a multifaceted attacking force under Unai Emery.
In his first full Premier League season, he registered 8 goals and 8 assists across 34 appearances, averaging a goal contribution every 179 minutes.
His Champions League performances further underscored his growth, contributing 4 goals and 3 assists in 12 matches while operating as a false nine and inverted winger.
However, Villa’s stance remains firm: securing Champions League qualification (currently 7th, needing top-five finish) would make a sale highly unlikely.
Chelsea’s parallel interest complicates matters, though both clubs acknowledge Villa’s reluctance to negotiate.
Despite Champions League revenue, Villa’s financial outlook remains dire?
Recent accounts revealed £119.6m (2022/23) and £85.9m (2023/24) losses-totaling £205.5m over two seasons.
With PSR (Profit and Sustainability Rules) permitting only £105m losses over three years, Villa must generate pure profit before June 30.
Previous sales of Douglas Luiz (£42m), Moussa Diaby (£50m), and Jhon Durán (£64m) provided temporary relief, but further high-value departures are inevitable.
Academy graduate Jacob Ramsey, linked to Tottenham, represents “pure profit” and a likely sacrificial lamb.
Now the Daily Mail have come out to claim that “Villa need to make at least one significant sale before June 30 to ensure they stay in line with Premier League spending rules”.
Someone like Morgan Rogers would certainly fall into the category of a ‘significant sale’.
Liverpool showed with the Anthony Gordon saga last summer that they are not scared to take advantage of PSR-afflicted clubs.
Liverpool’s interest in Morgan Rogers is genuine, and they clearly view him as a valuable addition to their attacking lineup.
However, whether the Reds can secure his signature will largely hinge on how Aston Villa’s season concludes and how willing the Midlands club is to enter negotiations.
Much will depend on some of the other sales Unai Emery opts to make in his squad.
